Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
