"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated fans have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals frequently show them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

But the band will forever be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
