During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
